Quickest to 1000

Posted by Nazly on Friday, 31st March 2006 21:51:14 (GMT +0530)

During his 71 run knock against India in the 2nd ODI, Kevin Pieterson reached 1000 runs in just 21 innings. He became the quickest to 1000 runs along with Viv Richard to reach this landmark who also achieved this in 21 innings. His knock didn't help England to win this match as England are already 2 down in the series. If Kevin can convert his fifties to hundreds England sure can beat the hell out of India this series as chances are still there [Wink]

Feeling Xgl

Posted by Nazly on Sunday, 26th March 2006 20:54:56 (GMT +0530)

When I heard about Xgl, I desperately wanted to get a feel of it and then got to know about Kororaa from DistroWatch sometime back. Kororaa is a Live CD with Xgl. At that moment I felt this is the best way to get a feel of it and I download it right away but the iso was just lying there on my harddisk for all these time. Last week I was so desperate, I burnt a copy and booted with the Kororaa Live CD and it ran into X Windows without any issues. I have a nVidia GeForce2 video card. I was stunned for a second playing around it. When I showed my collegues they were like [eek]

One thing I should add up.. These screenshots and videos will only give u an idea of what it can do. The live feeling is totally a different case. Why don't you try it out by downloading it from here.

Here is an interesting article about an art school that completely switched to Ubuntu in place of Mac OS X in their digital media lab.

Firing all cylinders

Posted by Nazly on Wednesday, 22nd March 2006 21:34:57 (GMT +0530)

Englishmen fired all their cylinders to win the 3rd and final Test match which was played in Mumbai. India requiring 313 runs for victory were bowled out for 100 runs just after lunch in the final day giving a 212 run victory to England. English side had to push young lads in due to the abscence of couple of senior and experienced players. All eyes were on newly appointed English captain Andrew Flintoff. The first test ended in a draw and India won the 2nd one. Series ended in draw after this comprehensive victory by England. Andrew Flintoff's fine performance with both bat and ball earned him the Man of the Match and the Man of the Series awards. Debutant Owais Shah made an impressive knock who came in to replace the injured Cook. James Anderson who replaced injured Harmison also made a big impact bagging 6 wickets in this match. One-dayers will kick off on the 28th of March. Lets wait see and who will come on top.

Record breaking and best win ever

Posted by Nazly on Monday, 13th March 2006 09:20:42 (GMT +0530)

The One-day series between Australia and South Africa was level at 2-2 and was a must win for both teams when they were about to clash in the 5th ODI. Winning the toss Australia broke the record for the highest score ever scored in a One-day International and the first 400 plus score when they reached 434 for the loss of 4 wickets. Ricky Ponting scored 164 off just 105 balls while Michael Hussey got 81 off 51 balls. Katich and Gilchrist too chipped in with 79 and 55 respectively.

The South African's never let themselves down and went for the massive never gettable looked total. Herschelle Gibbs scored 175 off just 111 balls while Greame Smith got 90 off 55 balls. Gibbs got out when the score was on 299 in the 32nd Over. Most of the damage was done by that time. Useful innings from Boucher and van der Wath saw South African's home breaking the world record with just one ball to spare and one wicket to lose. The record for the highest total in an ODI now stands at 438 made by South Africa. What a match it was. South Afican's won the series 3-2. Ponting and Gibbs were both awarded the man of the match award. Now when will this record be broken. It took ten years for the previous highest to be broken which was 398 made by Sri Lanka against Kenya in the 1996 world Cup.

SLAX, the pocket OS

Posted by Nazly on Sunday, 12th March 2006 21:27:32 (GMT +0530)

For all those LIVE CD fans, try out SLAX which based on the Slackware distro. Its a cute little OS that will fit in on a Mini CD or a USB disk. More importantly additional modules can be downloaded and copied to the modules directory on the CD for extending it according to our requirements.

Patching

Posted by Nazly on Sunday, 12th March 2006 20:27:14 (GMT +0530)

I had to modify a part of a small project I did couple of months back. According to the requirement I felt a small patch would do. And last week I spend couple of hours late night and ended up screwing up the whole code. My eyes were off to sleep than I was, so I figured out the workaround is no good.

Then Today morning I sat and decided to throw the patch to recycling and started to re-code that part and that process worked well. It was fun though. There are times that patching suits better than recoding but this was a different case. Its always better to analyse before having a goahead.

Babysteps.. babysteps..

Posted by Nazly on Saturday, 11th March 2006 20:03:34 (GMT +0530)

I installed Slackware lately and really learnt a lot in the process. Babysteps to the Linux World. The only distros I have tried before are Redhat's Linux versions and Fedora Core 4 lately. Other than Redhat I have used Knoppix and Ubuntu's LiveCD versions. This time I felt to make a move and prefered Slackware over Gentoo and Debian, some of the favourite distros here in Sri Lanka. Don't ask my why. Its a tryout. I'm not gonna have any comments on which distro is better.

My initial requirement was to get SAMBA running. Of course the server will be on a Windows Network environment. And after couple of reading over the Web I configured SAMBA and thats it, we have a file server running on Linux. Next target is to get CVS up.. Won't be that difficult I guess..

Learning quick

Posted by Nazly on Sunday, 5th March 2006 23:21:13 (GMT +0530)

The first test between England and India ended today in a draw. English Captain Michael Vaughan [Knee Injury], Vice Captain Marcus Trescothick [Personal reasons] and Simon Jones [Injury] had to fly back to England prior to the first test. All responsiblities were on the new appointed captain Andrew Flintoff. Alistair Cook and James Anderson flew back in the middle of an 'A' tour to West Indies to join the squad for replacement. Alistair Cook made his mark by scoring a century and a half century on debut. England showed great class playing on subcontinental wickets. Learning the lessons from the tour of Pakistan I guess. I was expecting Simon Jones comeback after his Ashes heroics but his injury kept him away from the Pakistan tour and now it seems he won't be available for this tour as well. England's warhorse Matthew Hoggard was exceptional. He bagged 6 wickets in the first innings. England will focus on this tour very hard as they have a very good chance of winning this series.

My new buddy 6230i

Posted by Nazly on Saturday, 4th March 2006 22:57:18 (GMT +0530)

Couple of days back I bought a new phone. I had couple of choices in my mind and due to its slim model and features I had a go for the Nokia 6230i. 65K colors TFT Display (208 x 208 pixels), MMC upto 512MB, 1.3 MP Camera, MP3/AAC/M4A stereo player, 3GPP/MPEG4 video player, FM stereo radio, WAP 2.0/xHTML Browser are few cool features it has. Connectivity includes GPRS, HSCSD, EDGE, Bluetooth and IR. Its stylish look and its size what captured me the most against bulky models. So far happy with it and playing around it. Will capture some nice photos and upload them soon.

Nokia 6230i

I have to say goodbye to my Sony Ericsson T610 as it was a great phone with all the features I need. I made sure that 6230i will replace all those features that the T610 had. The 6230i is the 5th phone in my 5 years of mobile phone usage. Ericsson T20, Nokia 3315, and Samsung X100 are the phone models I used prior to this. Each had a unique feature I like in them. Nothing to blame [Wink]
