Harmison rocks Pakistan
Posted by Nazly on Saturday, 29th July 2006 21:16:59 (GMT +0530)Harmison's 10 wicket haul in the match won the match for England as they beat Pakistan by an innings and 120 runs. He picked up 6 wickets in the first innings restricting Pakistan total to 119 runs and picked 5 wickets in the second. Monty Panesar gave good support to Harmison as he picked up the rest of the Pakistani wickets except for one run out in the first innings. England were able to get 461 in their first innings thanks to the hundreds scored by Alistair Cook and Ian Bell. These two seem to be in good touch at the moment, This victory is a confident boost for England in the run for this year's Ashes which will be played in Australia.

Day meant for records
Posted by Nazly on Saturday, 29th July 2006 21:16:07 (GMT +0530)Mahela Jayawardena(374) and Kumar Sangakkara(287) have recorded the highest partnership in Test Cricket by putting together 624 runs for the 3rd wicket in the 1st Test match against South Africa at SSC, Colombo. The previous record partnership 574 was held by Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama. It was a great moment for Sri Lankan Cricket. I personally had the opportunity to witness it. I hit the grounds during the 2nd session of play. Kumara Sangakkara unfornately got out for 287 trying to slash against fairly a wide delivery missing out on his 300.
After the dismissal of Sangakkara all eyes were focused on Mahela. He was on 309 at that time. The crowd were cheering for an every run he scored. Crackers started to burst and cheers by the crowd when he went passed 340, the highest Test Score by a Lankan which was scored by Sanath Jayasuriya. More crowd started to flow into the grounds expecting to see Mahela Breaking Brian Lara's 400 run record in Test Cricket. Unfortunately he got bowled to a delivery that pitched short and kept low when he was on 374. Andrew Nel was jubilant picking up the prize wicket. There was bit of a silence in the ground for few seconds then the big standing ovation by the crowd to the young Sri Lankan captain. He missed out on the record but he proved himself as one of the best batsman in the world of Test Cricket. Hats off to Mahela and hopefully we can see more records broken by this elegant batsman.

Back in action
Posted by Nazly on Monday, 17th July 2006 13:29:01 (GMT +0530)Atlast after one month break I'm playing Cricket again. I was missing all the action because of not being well over the last month. First it was the migraine related heaches then the recovery phase of it. Then again last week I got this flu from no where as I still suffer from bit of it. Anyway I didn't want to hold for long so hit the grounds over the weekend.
It was fun all around. Two first ball ducks where one was a runout and scored just one run in the last game ending notout. Didn't make that much out of the bat though bowled decently. It was more a comeback week than performing. Glad to be back in action.

Lankans reclaim honours
Posted by Nazly on Wednesday, 5th July 2006 12:38:18 (GMT +0530)Oh boy. I never thought in the past that teams would pass 400 in an ODI match. During the early 90's even reaching 300 was a bigtask. Sri Lankans changed the face of the game during the 1996 World Cup which they won. The mammoth total 398 which they scored against Kenya during the WorldCup 1996 remained the highest ODI total for 10 years where lot of teams came a lot closer during that period. England reaching 391-4 in 50 overs against Bangladesh and New Zealand reaching 397-5 in just 44 overs against Zimbabwe can be considered as the ones that got close.
Finally after 10 years the record was broken by the Aussies when they got 434-4 against South Africa. But the best part was this record was broken by the end of that match as South Africa won that match scoring 438-9 in the run chase. Without any argument this will go down as the best ever ODI in the histroy of the game.
And the Lankans have done it again. Against Netherlands they reached 443-9 in 50 overs. Sanath Jayasuriya the star during the England tour got 157 in just 104 balls. In reply Netherlands only could reach to 248.
We will see more fireworks in the future for sure in ODIs and I feel someday some team will get 500. In will be an interesting how teams approach to next year's World Cup.

Whitewash
Posted by Nazly on Sunday, 2nd July 2006 21:36:19 (GMT +0530)It has been sometime I blogged about Cricket and after watching the last ODI played between Sri Lanka and England I felt I should. Start of the series I felt it will be England all the way considering their performance in the last 12 months after winning the Ashes. England had a couple injury concerns though had a tough enough side to beat Sri Lanka. First Test was in England's bag but fighting Lankans pulled off the great escape ever taking advantage of England's poor fielding where they dropped more than 10 catches in the second innings. Sanath Jayasuriya, the lankan Master Blaster who retired from Test Cricker rejoined the Lankan Test squad to add bit of experience to the side but didn't play in the second Test which was won by England with some ease. Murali's magic saw the Lankans win the third Test and draw the series as he bagged 8 wickets in the second innings where he picked 11 wickets in the match.
More problems for England when the One-dayers started. The ODI player of last year Andrew Flintoff was out due to injury. The 5 match ODI series ended up in a whitewash where the Lankans won all five thanks to some serious batting performance. England kept losing players during the course of the series due to injuries. Kevin Pieterson and Paul Collingwood the two best ODI players around were among them. But at this level there aren't any excuses. English point of view they gotta do some serios thinking to get their act right in all departments before they face Pakistan as its gonna be tough than this. Lankans point of view I have no words to say. They simply outplayed the Englishmen. Skipper Mahela played some brilliant knocks. Upul Tharanga is the newest found gem for Sri Lankan Cricket. He has placed him self right at the top. Only problem is finding the perfect partner for him. Jayasuriya was dominant as ever. If you watched the last ODI where he scored 152 in just 99 balls you would know what I'm talking about.
During the match it was caught to the camera where one Lankan guy in the crowd was holding a banner with the saying 'Englang might beat Portugal but not Sri Lanka'. England were supposed to clash with Portugal that evening in the quarter finals of FIFA World Cup 2006. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. England lost to Portugal too
