by Nazly on Thursday, 18th November 2010 23:06:45

WordPress is simple, yet powerful. Those are the key ingredients why it is popular among the Bloggers and Web Developers alike. WordPress will always be the first choice as a blogging platform. In the recent times it has moved far from being just a blogging engine. Most Web developers choose WordPress as their primary CMS of choice ahead of other popular Content Management Systems. Regardless of you being a Blogger or a Web Developer, the manner you maintain your WordPress files and database will play an important role in running a successful website.

Twitter @ Mentions via SMS

by Nazly on Thursday, 18th November 2010 12:03:14

This is more a follow up post to Tweets via SMS: Now active for Sri Lanka which I published on 2nd April 2010 when Tweets via SMS was first activated for Sri Lankan users. Twitter only supported receiving tweets via SMS from individual tweeps. Direct Messages were sent via SMS as well. But an important feature was missing. Twitter didn’t send @ mentions via SMS. A lot of tweeps asked me personally about this since they thought this was a fault by the local operator. But Twitter FAQs clearly stated that it didn’t support this feature.

Yesterday morning I suddenly realized that there is a sudden flow of SMS from Twitter. It was not from the tweeps I have subscribed to receive SMS tweets. Only indication was the @ mention. This is when I realized that Twitter might have activated this long awaited feature. All the doubts were cleared when I read Twitter blog : Instant Notifications.

Colombo Traffic Updates via Twitter

by Nazly on Monday, 8th November 2010 13:04:56

Traffic. It’s one of the craziest things we come across more often than not in any given day. It can be due to peak hours, accidents, road blocks, rain, flood, fallen tree, cat crossing the road or what ever reason it may be, it will always be annoying as ever. Don’t we feel that we could have avoided the traffic if we knew the situation before hand. But its a problem that never gets solved. Coz you find random and awkward traffic every now and then.

The idea of using Twitter to share Traffic updates just spurred when @induNan posted this on Twitter:
“So.. Does anyone know? Is there a traffic update/alert #Twitter a/c or hashtag for Colombo or Srilanka??”.

Explore Sri Lanka – Drive to the hills

by Nazly on Wednesday, 15th September 2010 18:57:53

It has been almost over two years I stopped traveling around this beautiful country due to various reasons. Most of my trip buddies left the country or work at different places so I got mostly stuck in Colombo. After the month of Ramadan, I got the much needed break and took the long drive to the hill country.

PHP date() function usage and examples

by Nazly on Saturday, 19th June 2010 12:56:55

I have been coding PHP like for almost 10 years. The date() function in PHP is a widely used function in most of my apps. The application or website I’m developing will require to associate with a date at some point. When displaying a date/time it requires to be displayed in a particular format. This will be different from one app to another. So remembering each format character is quite difficult even thought I have 10 years of experience on my back. So each an every time I head to the PHP: date() Manual to find out the format character. I have had cheat sheet wallpapers as my desktop wallpaper but I still felt the PHP Manual served me better. But finally I decided to build my own reference with commonly used character combinations with their respective output to make my life much easier (not that it was difficult before) so that other PHP developers will benefit out of this as well.
